What is it about a hive that makes it remarkable?
Actually, it’s many things. For one, it’s the power of the collective. A lone worker cannot build such a complex structure. But a colony can, by working in synergy. For another, it’s the hive’s super-efficient means of energy storage. This allows the colony to thrive and new hives to form, benefitting multiple eco-systems.
This is a little like what we do at Hive. Our energy storage systems work together to form powerful hives of efficiently stored, renewable energy. As with bees, our hives work in tandem, depending on energy needs, and more hives can be added. This benefits communities as well as the environment.
It’s simple, smart and effective. We like to think of it as connective intelligence.
Why is it important to store energy?
Australia’s journey towards renewable energy, such as that created by wind and solar, has made smart energy storage essential. We use the most energy in the early evening – just when these sources aren’t working as effectively, so storage becomes even more important. At Hive, we store grid-based energy – to go back into the grid when it’s needed.
The more we store, the more we can generate. And the faster we can transition to more clean energy in the future.
What’s different about a Hive site?
Hive sites are simple to construct, flexible in their placement and can be situated close to substations. Like beehives, each Hive site communicates with others, and can either respond separately or collectively to the needs of the network. And just as a beehive benefits its environment, Hive sites make it easier for other renewable energy projects to go live sooner.
